I agree with your comments on incentive pay. You really need to pay attention to how the bonus is calculated and what you need to do to get it. My last job promised a 40% bonus, but once inside I found out that most people got around 7-10%. It made a huge difference to my annual take home pay. It's a lesson I learned the hard way.
