How to Post Job Advertisements
That Get Results
Knowing how to post job advertisements that get results will help keep your recruiting budget on track.
For many positions, it's more economical for employers to recruit candidates directly,
without the help of an outside recruiter. While you can use employee referral programs,
networking strategies and similar low cost methods, it's usually a good idea to cast a wider
net in your search for talent.
In today's market, you need to be advertising on the internet rather than using a newspaper.
Craig's List is usually a good source for local candidates; using a job board, that allows you to post jobs and search
resumes, is also a good alternative.
Your Ad Copy
All too often, job advertisements posted by employers read like a job description.
There's a need to think about job postings in a much different way. You are selling your
opportunity and your company, just like Heinz sells ketchup. Just like Heinz does not showcase the fine
print on their label, you shouldn't incorporate all of the nitty-gritty details of what
the "incumbent" will do in a day when you post job opportunities!
Instead, try to create some excitement around your opening and your organization. Focus on what's
in it for the candidate - access to senior management, upward mobility, responsibility and accountability
for results, great benefits, great compensation package...use whatever fits your situation.
Why do people like working for your company? How about the hiring manager? What do you offer
that others don't? While I do not advocate misrepresenting any of the details, you need to appeal to
the benefits of working for your organization.
No one wants to be stuck in a dead end job with a company that's going down hill. Make sure when you
post job advertisements you create some excitement!
A note about keywords...
Candidates often search for a new opportunity based on keywords. Make sure that you include keywords
that reflect the functional role you're recruiting for as well as your industry.
For example, if you're looking for a sales rep and you are interested in people coming out of the financial
services industry, you'll want to include keywords like: sales rep, sales representative, account manager,
business development, relationship manager, etc. For the industry, you might use: financial services,
banking, asset management, financial planning, wealth management, insurance and similar descriptors.
A note about which job boards to use...
There are more than 40,000 job boards on the internet today. How do you decide which one to use
when you post job openings? We will readily admit that we are not fans of the big boards (Monster, etc.).
These resources are expensive and not very well targeted. While they can boast big numbers in terms of
the traffic they receive, their traffic is not targeted. Most of us who have posted on the big boards
have been excited by huge response to our ads, only to be disappointed with the quality of the response.
Niche job boards are going to yield fewer overall responses, but you're going to find the quality of
the resumes you receive to be much better. In our opinion, this is a good trade off! Whether you
choose Top-Sales-Jobs.com or another board for your openings, niche is definitely the way to go!
