As a recruiter, I've interviewed countless numbers of candidates from a long line of disciplines. In almost all cases, I've interviewed candidates by phone before agreeing to see them in person.

At the level I'm recruiting for, these phone interviews are not just quick screens. They are serious interviews that give me a sense of whether what I'm seeing on a candidate's resume is what I'm going to get in person. I'm not often surprised.

I can usually tell within a minute or two if a candidate has what it takes to move forward in the process. I'm sure you've read elsewhere on this site that your resume only gets 15-20 seconds before someone makes an up or down decision on your candidacy. My radar is similar when it comes to the interview. In reality, I make up my mind within the first 60 seconds.

As a candidate, you would never know this. I'm way too polite.

There are times, however, that I want to jump through the phone and put the candidate on a different path. They are totally unaware that they are self destructing. They are not bad people. They are just poor interviewees. These candidates can benefit from answering mock interview questions before they tackle the real thing!
